Essential oils can have a very beneficial effect on oral health. Myrrh oil for example has long be used to treat mouth ulcers and painful gums whereas thyme and tea tree oil as well as eucalyptus have anti bacterial and anti fungal properties. Grapefruit oil sweetens the more herbal oils and peppermint oil freshens breath.
Sesame oil has been used as a pulling oil for many centuries.
Oil pulling reduces the amount of Streptococcus Mutans which is resonsible for the formation of plaque and tooth decay. Once the bacteria takes over your immune system starts to attack them and this in turn cause gingivitis which is an inflammation of the gums.
Oil pulling can be effective against bad breath or hallitosis which is cause by gases that are formed by bacteria in the mouth. If you get rid of the bacteria, you get rid of the bad breath.
Oil pulling is best done in the morning on an empty stomach. Take 1 tablespoon of oil and swish it around your mouth for 10 - 20 minutes - DO NOT SWALLOW THE OIL as you don't want to swallow all the bad bacteria! Spit out the oil after you finished with the swishing and then brush your teeth as normal. Tip: do the oil pulling whilst showering - less boring and saves time. And do not use a lot of force, just press the oil with your tonuge through your teeth every now and then. That's it. You should see some results after 2 - 3 weeks.
You can also try and use this oil as a direct gum treatment by applying a drop to your index finger and rubbing the oil onto your gums several times a day. I make no medical claims though!
